To examine how differences in Western and Eastern characteristics affect the projective method, epresentations of the Baum test were compared in French, New Caledonian and Japanese children. The main results are as follows: 1) in terms of development, the Japanese moved from the schematic expression of the "Trunk-top covered with the straight line" earlier than the French and New Caledonians, but the "Branche-top covered with the straight line" remained until an advanced stage of development; 2) the French and New Caledonians continued to tackle this schematic representation until an older age than the Japanese, and consequently the number of "additional forms" increased. These results show that the Japanese tend to focus on the whole from the start (holistic), whereas the French and New Caledonians tend to focus on a part (analytical). The cultural differences between the analytical cognition of Westerners and the holistic cognition of Easterners were even recognized in the children's representations in the Baum test, but holistic cognition only exists in East Asians. |
