Two patients, both under long-term hospitalization of more than ten years, and with a desire to return to life in society, described their experiences through a semi-structured interview. The following points were revealed : 1) The patiants realized that the reasons for the practical difficulty in their discharge included insuffi-cient information on the use of social resources and that they would not be actually accepted by their families. 2) Although the patients had adapted to the protective environment of the hospital and developed a lifestyle with little stress, the preparation necessary to return to life in society put them under considerable stress. This caused them more internal state than they could cope with. In other words, the belief that in the present state a return to life in society may actually impossibleled to lower their low self-esteem, which in turn weakened their will to participate in the psychiatric rehabilitation. These resulted in long-term hospitalization. 3) The patients themselves felt that their hospitalization was not due to their illness, but rather to the lack of understanding on the part of their families end those around them, as well as their own inability to cope with the situation caused by their development history. They also believed that their long-term hospitalization hindered their social adaptability. At the same time, they were aware that they could not assimilate their past experiences and adhered to them.
