内容記述 Several previous reports were shown maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is a well accepted index of cardio-respiratory fitness, however, the validity of VO2max as an index of this fitness in older adults is not well studied. The aim of this review study was to assess this validity based on the results of cross-sectional and longitudinal studies. Results of cross-sectional studies indicate that decline of VO2max in trained athletes is significantly more than that of general people with aging /or at the time of detraining. On the other hand, VO2max assessment test is not very feasible at community settings as results of previous studies show that not more than 10% to 15% of older adults respond to perform this test voluntarily. Estimation of the decline of VO2max with aging can be performed more accurately by performing longitudinal studies than cross sectional studies. However, exercise intensity and volume may change in trained athletes due to factors other than aging. Naturally, it becomes difficult to conclude the rate of VO2max decline in these people based on the results of longitudinal studies. Moreover, one or more chronic disease or disabilities that associate with aging interfere in performing longitudinal studies in older adults. It is difficult to determine the VO2max to untrained older adults. Many of them just give up grading exercise test, or the attending doctor terminates the test before attainment of VO2max level while performing exercise test. As a result, peak oxygen uptake (peakVO2), or lactate threshold (and/or anaerobic threshold) are used to evaluate the cardio-respiratory fitness in older adults instead of VO2max. These findings indicate that VO2max has lot of limitations to be an effective index of cardio-respiratory fitness in older adults, suggesting that reconsideration is needed to accept the VO2max or to find an alternative index that could be effectively and widely used to determine the cardio-respiratory fitness in older adults of different physical conditions.
