Subjects were 80 first year students in the School of Nursing at A University. Forty six (57.5%) valid responses, i.e., answer sheets without omissions, were obtained. Analysis of valid responses revealed that over 90% of students viewed discussion-based learning favorably. Students gave particularly high evaluations for \"independence\" which students experience in discussion-based learning. Evaluations were generally low with respect to \"exchange of opinions\", and students expressed such views as, \"discussion time is short\" and \"discussion content is difficult\". The survey suggests that in order to improve self-directed learning capacity in students through discussion-based learning, it is necessary to consider the characteristics and learning levels of
